This book follows Wendall and Floyd through an adventure in the lost and found, when their friend Mona falls in. They go through the adventure looking for a new lucky hat to turn their unluckiness around. This would be a good read aloud book for younger grades, as it is a little longer, but it is still easy to read and follow along.

Purchased Spanish language books and collected them at TLA Conventions, my granddaughter has expressed the desire to learn to read Spanish better, therefore I am giving all I can find in my collection to her.

I know it's about learning to fly and not being afraid. But the whole book felt rather harsh to me.

EDITED: I have upped my review a star. Here's why:

One of the things I love best about being a librarian is learning from other librarians. A colleague of mine read this book at our mock Caldecott program. And she brought it to life! I saw it in a way I never quite anticipated. I still don't know if I will ever return to it again. BUT I do think it is better than I first thought

The Tree House that Jack Built

I Picked Up This Book Because: Jaxson request.

Media Type: Paperback
Source: Jax’s Collection
Dates Read: 1/28/23
Stars: 3

The Story:

The story was cute with great illustrations. The rhyming scheme was clunky and awkward to me, but Jaxson loved it and that’s all that matters.

Why, oh why, do I keep checking these books out? I really dislike how the dinos model terrible behavior at first. My son, however, LOVES them.

Just like kids, dinosaurs have a difficult time learning to behave at the table. However, with a little help from Mom and Dad, these young dinosaurs eat all before them with smiles and goodwill.

Review originally published at The Children's Book and Media Review

Jack built a tree house by the sea, but then many animals come to the tree house with jack. First it’s a fly, then a lizard, then a parrot, a cat, and so on. They have all come to hear Jack read a book. This particular book is about a boy who lives in a tree house by the sea and all of the animals are his friends. Starting with a twist on the familiar story of “the house that Jack built,” the story takes on its own identity in Jack’s tree house.

Unlike the nursery rhyme, this book starts out repeating the animals, but soon tells its own story without the repetition of every item, although some things are occasionally repeated. Because of this, the rhyme and rhythm loses its pattern at some points in the book. The illustrations of the animals and the tree house are colorful and fun, but the loss of the poetic form of the text takes away from the book’s impact, particularly when the book is read aloud.

This review originally found at The Children's Book and Media Review

The three little pigs live happily on a farm until one day the farmer tells the pigs that he and his wife are moving to Florida. The first pig builds his house out of straw so that he can have plenty of money left over for potato chips. The second pig builds his house out of sticks so that he will have plenty of money for sody-pop. The third pig decides to build her house out of bricks and mortar. When a hungry and somewhat bad wolf comes to town and all of the food places are closed, he goes to look for food at the pig’s houses. The pigs discover that when the wolf isn’t too hungry, he can be a good friend and is hardly bad at all.

This unusual tale of the three little pigs is a great resource to introduce new versions of familiar stories. Adults can talk to their children about spending habits and priorities, as well as choosing to be kind to people who might not be behaving in a kind way themselves. The vocabulary is likely to stretch young readers, but most readers will be amused by the illustrations and the personalities of the pigs. Readers who enjoy fractured fairy tales are likely to enjoy this new take on a classic story.

This wordless picture book would be a great fit for primary grade students. It is a sweet story about a baby bird who is afraid to learn to fly. His mother tries to encourage him but he comes up with many alternative ways he could make it south for the winter instead of learning to fly. This book is a fun and easy read (as it's wordless) and would be a great book for a science introduction about bird migration.½

I found this one to be a bit hard to follow. I sometimes had to flip back a page to figure out what was going on. Overall, it's a story about a baby bird that doesn't want to leave the nest, while its parent is trying to convince it to give flying a shot. Since I had some trouble following it, I think little kids might also struggle without some explanation to go along with it. Pretty cute, but could have had more illustrations to better explain what was happening.
