I enjoyed this book. I liked that the author used captions to label each picture that coincided with the information that was on the opposite page. I also liked that each page was a new topic. It helped keep the information concise. The author focused on Gloria’s life as well as a singer as well as the struggles she and her family had to overcome.

This book discusses diversity and stereotypes. I think it would be good during lessons on the civil rights movement. It promotes diversity and respecting other cultures. I would most likely use it with older students, but this topic is not really discussed with younger grades.

Summary:
The book is a biography of Gloria Estefan. It tells about her journey form Cuba to Miami, her living conditions there, how she worked hard to make through college on scholarships. It also tells about how she started her singing career and some of the stuff she did when she was famous. The book focuses on her determination to succeed against all odds, it specifically cites an accident she had to work really hard to recover from.

Review:

I gave this book a full on 5 stars because I really think this a quality informational book. The book actually had a lot of good information about Gloria. the book also gave good in formation about the background history that affected her life, for example giving background information about the politics in Cuba. The author told enough about that to add to Gloria's life experience but did not make the book about cuba like some other authors. Something I really liked about this book was the text features. There are many for example there is a glossary for all of the big words in the book. For many of the words there is a pronunciation guide in parenthesis right next to them. The pictures accompanying each paragraph where very authentic.… (altro)
