Lovable, furry old Grover is distressed to learn that there is a monster at the end of this book. He begs readers not to turn the pages, but, of course, they just have to see the monster for themselves. And wait till they find out who is really is!

I have such clear memories of slamming the pages as I went through this book, breaking down brick walls and laughing like crazy.

Is there a monster at the end of this book? Lovable, furry old Grover believes that there is, and he will try anything to stop you from turning the pages to find him! "The Monster at the End of This Book," the bestselling Sesame Street book of all time, is an exciting and highly original tale that children will want to read again and again.

The book that began my love of an unreliable narrator.

The greatest horror story ever written. Everything before or since pales in comparison to the suffocating dread, the growing terror from each turn of the page.

Adorable book I read ages ago when I was a little girl. I enjoyed this book for what it was, a simple story that gets a child reading.

I used to read this book to my sister, doing all of Grover's terrified voices as she giggled along. This was such an surprising memory to end up seeing through the eyes of tonight.

A 1971 picture book.

Sesame Street's Grover wants you to stop reading this book.

B (Good).

I like high-concept meta stuff, and I love Grover, and the art/lettering style is nice. It doesn't offer a ton beyond the basic concept, though.

I simply love this books. It is a wonderful and funny. Kids will love hearing it even if they're not a Sesame Street fan. I enjoy doing a dramatic reading of this book. If I can get away with it, I'm going to do it during all my story times for ages 2 and up!

I read a lot. A. Lot.

This book is why. I, along with at least half of my senior class, have fond memories of going to our local library story time to hear the librarian (who I am lucky enough to also be able to claim as my Aunt) read this story book to us.

If you have not heard her read it, I'm sorry. You are missing out on something spectacular. The story is silly, of course. Grover freaks out about the monster at the end of the book and attempts to stop you from turning the page by trying to seal the pages shut. Even if you read this book with no infliction, it is amusing. If you really do it right though, read it with spirit and gusto, you will probably send your listener off on an adventure through the pages of numerous books and stories. It will give them a lifetime to explore the world in print.

This book made me love reading. This book literally changed my life. And while it sounds ridiculous to say that about a Sesame Street book when there are so many epic, great works of art out there, it is absolutely true for not only myself but many others from our small town. We, the class of 95, would talk about going to hear Kitty Wood read this book when we were kids. We would talk about how awesome the story was and how epic Kitty's version of it was. I would get jealous looks because they knew she was my aunt and they knew good and well I got extra readings of the story we all loved so much at home.

And I'm happy to say I did. ;)

Kept us turning the pages, waiting to see what monster would be at the end. Lovable Grover was funny in this one.

This is a classic picture book that is older but still fantastic! Students will love the storyline as Grover begs them not to turn the pages because he has heard that there is a monster at the end of the book. He does everything he can to glue the pages together and to build a strong, brick wall, yet the reader has the power to continue to turn the pages. The children will laugh their way through this book as they are in full control of getting to the end of the book to see if there really is a monster there. This book leads students to great discussions on which other things Grover could do to have them not turn pages or they can share what they think is actually going to be at the end of the book. Before the ending is read, the students can write or draw their own pictures of what they think is going to be at the end and then share their predictions. This is a book like no other and is one that students will want to read several times.

I read this for the "Written in the 1970's" part of my 2020 reading challenge. I had a newer edition of this book as a kid and it's always been one of my favorites.
