This reviews the audiobook read by the author.
Great job. I listened to the BBC Radio version at least twice because it was so good. This is a bit longer (almost 9 hours) and fleshes out the story with Steel's sociopepsicological musings on nature versus nurture, the treatment of women, communism/socialism/capitalism, antisemitism, privilege - and the whereabouts of Lord Lucan.
His birth mother's experience resonates with a similar one in my own family and I totally agree. No more lies. And I remember not being able to get credit or buy a car in my own name. Some things have improved.
I have to admit that I had started to nod off in the bit about Lord Lucan, but I might have been tired and I was sitting in a normal napping place. Otherwise, I had trouble stopping listening. It's a compelling story, a true story.

A tie in to the radio 4 series where Steel trawls round to different towns in the UK and discovers lots of amusing facts and anecdotes about the place. very funny in parts.

Brilliant. Learning through laughter, what a novel concept! Genuinely "laugh-out-loud funny" (as opposed to all those novels that assure me in big, bold letters that they are "laugh-out-loud funny" but fail to elicit anything but a smile), engaging, informative and engrossing. And, as always, Steel's passion and enthusiasm are infectious.

I've just finished the last chapter of Mark Steel's Reasons to be Cheerful through tears and laughter.

For the entirety of my life of 36 years, whenever someone has asked the question "What book has most changed your life?", I never had an answer because no book I'd ever read had changed my life. (Indeed, until I read Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, no book had even brought a tear to my eye.)

I think I may well have the answer to that question now.
