The overdubs do a lot more to hurt the recordings than help them (especially the drums, which have a radically different energy from Pops). Most of the tracks are duets with Mavis, whose huge voice buries Pops. And, yeah, Mavis is great. But it's something special in the moments when they let Pops shine through.
