Thaïs by Jules Massenet (1842 – 1912) is concerned with the contrary pulls of hedonism and asceticism: Eros versus the Holy Ghost, or sensuality versus Christian virtue. I Formed in 1955, Sinfonia of London was re-established in 2018 by the British conductor John Wilson to devote itself, at least initially, to recording projects. This recording of French orchestral works, released in February 2020, is the orchestra’s second CD.
It succeeds a hugely successful recording of Korngold’s Symphony in F sharp, which was released in September 2019. Both recordings have been issued in partnership with Chandos Records. Further discs will follow over the coming months. |
