I would have to say, if you are at all interested in 'The End of the World' as predicted for A. D. 1843, you should read this book. It was predicted that Jesus Christ would return to Earth and claim his own faithful followers in the year 1843 (and after that failed, in October 1844), and out of this emerged the Adventist Christian Churches (Seventh-Day Adventist and Seventh-Day Church of God) as well as the Jehovah's Witnesses and some other sects. Anyone who wonders if the Adventists actually made, and wore 'Ascension Robes' need look no further, for here we have the testimony of at least one woman who actually sewed the robes for her family and friends. Of course all this is vehemently denied by all the people who were involved in the events set forth in this book..... in the end I would have to give this book:… (altro)

This is a lost gem. Written in the a narrative, common romantic style of the early 19th century it pulls together a sweeping story of what transpired when the colonists and natives could no longer live at peace. While more modern accounts have been recently published none could possibly leave the reader more shaken than Endicott's. It is interesting to compare the balance of her narrative with earlier anti-Indian writings of men like Hubbard and the more modern anti-colonist accounts. In the end, the book and the story of the war, really America's first war, is a tragedy and will be hard to shake for any sensitive reader.… (altro)
