This story is about a young boy who hears the sounds of words all around him, but her can’t say them because of his stutter. When the young boy has a bad speech day at school his father picks him up and takes him somewhere quiet, the river. His father comforts him and compares his speech to the water flowing in the river. He uses this comparison to help comfort him when he gets upset about his speech. He repeated to himself every day “I talk like a river.”

I would definitely read this to primary or intermediate students to have discussions about being kind and understanding to our friends with disabilities in the classroom.

Gr 1–4—While the hero's challenge is stuttering, a loving father and glorious natural surroundings create the
resonant message that not everything expressive is a straight line, but can be a tumble of water, words, even ideas
in streams. This title is for every outsider who has ever been teased—it's for everyone.

This poignant picture book is about a boy’s experience with words and language, feelings about his stuttering and how others react to his stuttering. The words and pictures of the books unfold in way for the reader to understand how the boy views his voice – it is not smooth, but one that ebbs and flows, churns, crashes, and whirls like the water in the river.
I often look for books that give children an opportunity or window to view another’s experience. This book does a wonderful job to address the experiences of someone who stutters, but also those who are bullied and isolated.

I really love this book! A young boy who struggles with dealing with his stutter finds solace in the words of his father one afternoon as they visit his favorite place, the river. After a particularly bad speech day, the boy and his father spend some quiet time at the river, broken only by the father telling his son that he just talks like the river. The boy keeps this with him from then on, helping him to understand his stutter in a new light. Based on a true story, I thought this was a wonderful way for the dad help the son in feeling like he still belongs and to be able to relate to something in his surroundings that he really cares about. The illustrations are very fitting and beautiful, as the splashy watercolors remind you of the movements of the river.

A young boy awakes each day knowing he will not be able to talk clearly. All his words get stuck in the back of his mouth. This disability leaves him scared and humiliated as each school day he cannot speak clearly and feels follish and made fun of. He mumbles, his words tangle on his tongue, letters that begin a word get stuck in the back of his throat.

He envisions how his classmates see him with his face that looks strange as he twists his mouth to try to force the words to come out clearly. And, sadly all the words he needs to say do not come out clearly, and it is just another day when his speach is mumbled.

His loving father picks him up from school and lovingly tells him that his bad speech day simply means they should go somewhere quiet to relax and unwind. His father takes him to the river. But, the boy cannot help but ruminate how he thinks he sounded and looked to his classmates. His eyes fill with tears.

Lovingly his father points to the way the water moves over the rocks, and tells his son that his words are very much like the river that bubbles, churns, whirls and crashes.

The boy hopes he can remember that he talks like a river. As he enters the water he thinks again how calm the river is after the stones are twisted and turned. And, hopefully, if he remembers that after the busy twisting and turning, there is calm, even after the river stuttered.

The next day during school the boy told the class about his favorite place and how he talks like the river.

The book is based on real life experiences of the author Jordan Scott whose father lovingly helped him through the bad speech days.

This book is great for second or third graders, there are small texts, but the layout of the book may be harder for earlier readers. The book is about a boy who had a "bad speech day" and his father takes him down to the river. This book would be good in a classroom to show students different struggles that others may have. It gives insight into some differences that students have and allows students to understand better as well as feel more seen in the differences that they may have.

I really enjoyed this book. It is about a little boy with a stutter on a "bad speech day." On these days his dad would take him to the river and say "you talk like a river." I love this because it illustrates that there is nothing wrong with the little boy, even nature stutters. I think this book would be great to have in a classroom or for a read aloud depending on the class. This book would be best for the 1st-2nd grade.

This book is appropriate for kindergarten-2nd grade. It's about a boy with a stutter in a poetic format that describes what it feels like to struggle with stuttering and how words don't always flow out of his mouth correctly. I enjoyed this book and I would use this in my classroom for more awareness.

This book is recommended for primary students. This book depicts a student as they go to school and is unable to speak because of their stutter. In my future classroom, this book would be used as a way of introducing the fact that it is okay that some of us don't want to speak or are sometimes unable to.½

"I Talk Like a River" by Jordan Scott is a poetic and poignant story about a young boy who struggles with stuttering and finding his voice. The book beautifully captures the frustration, isolation, and eventual acceptance that many people with speech disorders experience. It's a valuable addition to any classroom as it promotes empathy, diversity, and inclusivity, and can help students understand and appreciate the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

The story is told from the point of view of a young child who has trouble pronouncing some letters. He begins to mutter rather than talk as a result of them becoming caught in the back of his throat and setting roots inside of his mouth. He becomes very affected by this, withdraws from his companions, and takes a seat at the back of the class. On the other hand, his father once took him to a river and told him, "You talk like the river." The child realizes as he thinks about this how the powerful river occasionally encounters obstacles in its route. Because of his relationship with nature, he has a lot of strength to accept who he is.

A beautiful children's book about a boy with a stutter. The illustrations are moving and enhance the words of the story. This story is a wonderful window into the experience of a boy who stutters, and the language used to describe the stutter is lyrical and beautiful. It highlights the differences as a thing of beauty; not something to be ashamed of.

This would be a good book to use with older intermediate-level readers. This story is about a little boy who has a stutter and how his father encourages him to realize that his speech is just like a river with its bubbling and whirling. I think that the words for this story are powerful but it would be a pretty difficult book to use with elementary students because they might not understand that the author is referring to having a stutter. I personally didn't love the illustrations for this book but if you were looking for something that had really unique illustrations this would be a great book for that.½

Ik praat als een rivier. Tekst: Jordan Scott. Illustraties: Sydney Smith.

I Talk Like a River is a poetic picture book that tells the story of a young elementary student that deals with a stuttering problem. On one particular day, his stuttering is especially bad, and he just needs a break from school. This is a sweet story that emphasizes the importance of caring for family members and valuing people's feelings. The book would also be useful for teaching children the concept of inclusion and standing up for those who are victims to bullying. After reading the book, I felt both sad and encouraged. It made me sad to think of students' feeling self conscious about their abilities or lack thereof, but I felt encouraged to think of supportive families such as the one in this book.

A young boy has trouble talking. His father describes his sons speech as a “river”. This books captures the emotions of someone with a stutter. The young boy describes how his words “whirl, churn, and crash” like a river does. I would recommend this book for students struggling with a speech disability or any student to learn how to be sympathetic with someone who has a speech disability.

this poetically written picture book outlines what it is like for the young boy with a stutter to not be able to form word-sounds. It is filled with nature metaphors, which allow readers to empathize with the boy. It concludes will personification of the river's movement and analogizes it to the way he speaks: paralleling its turbulence with its calm. I am in awe.

A loving, lyrical tribute to a father who empowered his son to be proud to talk like a river. When I ordered this book, I thought it would be about children in nature. And it is, but it's so much more. Jordan Scott relates his own childhood in poetic metaphors relating emotions and the natural world. Sydney Smith mirrors the words with lush illustrations that eloquently show the boy's emotions: blurred watercolors when he's upset illuminating to clear understanding as his father's perfect words bring peace and self-acceptance. The centerfold spread is stunning. A book for everybody - children, tweens, teens, adults - to share and savor.

Night & Ox by Jordan Scott is his fourth published work. Scott wrote much of this poetry as a young father holding his son in one hand and typing with the other.

I usually like to type a few hundred words or more in a review, but that is not the case with Night & Ox. A quick look at the cover will give the reader an idea of the poetry contained inside. Is it pen drawing of a rooster's head? Is it random? It has too much form to be random. The poetry inside is a single poem running almost ninety full-length pages. The lines, however, are usually a word or two long. It is abstract writing that does not form a picture in the mind, but rather captures the mind. The string of words flows well line to line and the reader will get caught up in the flow and feel of the words rather than any message they may carry. Some words are made up, but they seem to be real words and fit the flow of the poem. Night & Ox is an interesting piece of experimental or abstract poetry. It is worth a read for those looking for something new and different.

Scott's poetry is made to be sunken into and relished word by word, line by line. This collection especially is built for lovers of poetry and nature who relish the experience of language, and the way a poem can mirror a thing or a place or a connection with a focus that is clear, and meaning that may come more slowly. It is not easy poetry, but it is worth exploring and re-figuring.
