D Awkward cultural commentaries, weird post reading questions, and very little in way of myths. Disappointing.

I chose this book because I have never read anything about this cultures myths and they are my ancestors. It was so interesting and good to read. It reminded me of the children's movie El Dorado that my daughter and I love to watch. The stories are definitely like nothing I have ever read before. Growing up Catholic, it is hard for me to visualize that these things ever happened, but who is to say that they didn't. I loved to learn about my culture and I would love to study more.

Over the years, I’ve read several different biographies on Bob Dylan, so when I stumbled upon Bob Dylan: The Life and Times of an American Icon in the children’s biography section of the public library, I was intrigued. Obviously, Bob Dylan is usually seen as a figure from the past (often identified with his groundbreaking work from the 1960’s); however, he is still releasing new music today, which makes him a “contemporary” musician as well. The cover of the biography, written by Michael A. Schuman, features a haggard-looking photograph of Bob Dylan from the late 1990’s, a picture which accurately represents the more recent career of the folksinger (especially considering that the book was published in 2003). Although few children might know about Dylan and his music, there are undoubtedly a select few (like myself) who learn to appreciate his work at a young age. In popular music, Dylan is a direct link between older, traditional styles of music and more contemporary music. Children who read Bob Dylan: The Life and Times of an American Icon will be able to make connections between seemingly-archaic music and the songs of today’s radio; hopefully, this book will inspire them to investigate music as far back as Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams, as Bob Dylan once did as a child in Hibbing, Minnesota.

Schuman’s writing is very simple and straightforward; obviously, it has been stripped down to a more basic form of communication for younger readers. Throughout each chapter, Schuman incorporates a wide variety of quotations and citations, all of which add credibility to his assertions. Additionally, the author uses anecdotes from Dylan’s life to make him seem more relatable and human to young readers. The most impressive aspect of Schuman’s biography, however, is that he does not gloss over Dylan’s flaws at all. Several portions of the book speak frankly about his drug use (marijuana, alcohol, and even LSD are discussed), as well as his marital infidelities; clearly, Schuman has not fallen prey to simple hero worship with his book.

All in all, Bob Dylan: The Life and Times of an American Icon is an entertaining and informative (albeit super-condensed) examination of Dylan’s biography and art. Even I, an amateur-status Dylan expert, learned some interesting facts about Dylan’s life; I can only imagine how this book might inspire a child who has just become smitten with Dylan’s music and lyrics.
