Louder Than Hunger di John Schu
Most people immediately associate anorexia nervosa and allied eating disorders with teen females, but that's not always the case. This book, told in verse, looks at the agony and long duration of recovery for young teen Jake, blending his stream of consciousness with the voice in his head that tries to bully him into starving to death. Interwoven are family vignettes, early experiences that had a great deal to do with his eating issues, as well as those who so patiently and caringly work with him over a year plus of inpatient treatment. A book about school as a community, and the wide variety of people who attend school and work at school.
Very simple but enjoyable. I especially appreciate the gender-neutral language - when I was pointing things out to my niece I accidentally called two students “a boy” and “a girl” but the book calls them “a student” and “another student” and I should be more careful.
