Crimson Whisper (Systema Paradoxa) di Ken Schrader
Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing.
I really enjoyed this book. Although it is one in a series (which I haven’t read) it was a stand alone tale, and so descriptive I could see the jungle and the airships. The story reminded me a bit of a James Bond tale, but with better characters. The fact that the two protagonists were in a same sex relationship was refreshing to see. I need to find more of the series.

Crimson Whisper is Ken Schrader’s contribution to an ongoing series based on shadowy encounters with cryptids. While the cryptids and their mysterious motives vary within the Systema Paradoxa universe, most are based upon legendary creatures. Schrader chooses as humanity’s current threat the deadly Congolese J’ba Fofi. With a span up to five feet in diameter, these “giant spiders” provide a more than ample challenge to the book’s protagonists.
The volume will particularly appeal to readers who value strong female characters. Representing a British agency tasked with protecting the world, the two heroines form an unstoppable, and romantically engaged, team. The many action scenes are well composed, and replete with the nongraphic slaughter of ranks of bad guys.
Inspired by the spirit of Jules Verne, this intercontinental adventure fits well into that dimension of the science fiction universe. This is marked by the pulp era motif focusing on extraordinary scientific inventions. Schrader credibly maintains that ambiance throughout the book.
A favorite line, uttered by a malevolent scientist, is “science, when properly applied, will eventually unlock all of Nature’s secrets.” It evokes memories of the cabal at N.I.C.E. in C.S. Lewis’ That Hideous Strength.
Those who enjoy the adventure writings of Jules Verne and the atmosphere of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, will likely enjoy this story immensely.… (altro)

This was a fun, cozy read of two daring, adventurous women who embark on a remarkably high-stakes adventure by themselves. Each of them brings something different to the table, but are jointly strengthened by their love. It was a heartwarming story with just the right amount of twists and turns, plus thrilling escapades!

Woo Hoo Loved it, This is one of those books that creeps up on you. Nothing I love more than an adventure in the Amazon. This book was very well written and the characters were relatable and well developed. I was holding my breath on how this one would end but I was satisfied with how it evolved. No spoilers here.
