Alexander M. Schenker (1924–2019)

This book is a great introduction to Slavic philology, no more, no less. It features sections on the historical background of the Slavs, a sketch of Proto-Slavic, and photographs of early Slavic documents with transcriptions and translations, and an extensive bibliography. It's a wonderful first book on Slavic philology for the beginning student, bound to pique their interest in pursuing some of the topics further.

It is *not* a handbook to common and comparative Slavic (though, disturbingly, I have seen it used as such by PhD students). The book has its shortcomings and flaws, but anyone seriously pursuing Slavic philology will clear up those issues as they continue with their studies, and they're not major enough to cloud the picture for someone who doesn't continue. Recommended also for non-scholars with an interest in Slavic.
