Sheryl Sandberg

I thought this was an excellent book. Ms. Sandburg laid out the problems facing women in the workplace comprehensively, and she did not forget to include problems facing men on the opposite side of the coin. The working world clearly has room for improvement, even with the strides that have taken place since women first entered the out-of-the-home work force.

There was very little mention, however, of women without the outstanding support system Ms. Sandburg enjoys. She does acknowledge this, but I think the book would have been better if more well-rounded. She talks about husbands and nannies and flex time, which are usually not available to, for example, a single mother working retail (just to take an example at random...).

She made excellent points about the broader social environment that gives rise to the inequalities in the workplace. Generally no one, she points out, calls little boys "bossy," for example, if they want to direct the play. Girls must push against social expectations from the get-go, hence the title, "Lean In."… (altro)

This book is partly about feminism and partly about working in general. It was a very interesting read, because in a few months I will (probably) start working in a male-dominated field. It is not often that you read a book exactly at the right moment in your life.
I would recommend the Graduate Edition to anyone in their 20s. The original book is supplemented with a letter from Sheryl and a collection of essays from various authors. I thought the essays at the end were at least as valuable as the book. The diversity of stories and voices was especially pleasant to read after reading Sandberg's monologue.… (altro)

Yeesh. Some good content, and she tries really hard to understand the plight of the little people, but it is simply too difficult to be in a position of such privilege and then offer sound advice to the rest of us on how to grieve.

Additionally, I don't think she is trying to name drop throughout - being a successful executive at two of the largest of tech companies - but the folks she can lean on are not in the same position to offer support as normal people would have access to.

I'm truly saddened for her loss, and I wish her the best in her life, but the detachment from reality is too much for me.… (altro)
