Breve biografia
Steven Runciman was the highly erudite scholar, historian and linguist (in his work he used Latin, Greek, French, Russian, Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Hebrew, Syriac, Armenian and Georgian) who specialized in the Middle Ages, particularly the Byzantine Empire and the Crusades. After receiving a large inheritance in 1938, he resigned his lectureship at Cambridge to focus fully on his writing. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1957 and was knighted in 1958.

More fun and games in the Middle East by French knights. I’ll give away the ending: they lose.

Readable but somewhat out of fashion historical narrative that nevertheless gets my money for still the best. Certainly, the most influential when it comes to the modern conception of the First Crusade. Runciman’s moral opinions are largely read-between-the-lines obvious but rarely stated overtly, more in the style of a Johnson or Gibbons.

The last book in Runciman's survey of the Crusading Movement. The final chapter of this volume has the title the summing up. He ends with a judgement that the Crusades were "A tragic and destructive episode." Runciman has presented, in these three volumes, a balanced and clear picture of the European side of the period. The appendix dealing with the sources is a very good summary. there are very useful genealogical tables, and the maps are reasonably clear. I recommend this book for the ideal medieval library.… (altro)
