Breve biografia
[from University of York website]
Julie Rugg started working at the University in 1991. Her work is focussed on policy evaluation and principal areas of expertise include the private rented sector (PRS), housing assistance within the welfare system and qualitative analysis of housing behaviours. She is particularly interested in the ways the PRS functions as a ‘complex system', and her work seeks to understand characteristics of rental sub-markets, the behaviours of tenants and landlords, and the operation and impact of enforcement activity. She is currently leading a large ESRC-funded project ‘Understanding criminality in the private rented sector and co producing solutions'. Julie has also published extensively on cemeteries and funeral practice and is Director of the Cemetery Research Group.

This is a book to dip into from time to time. It is certainly a delight no matter where or when you read the brief selections about books and reading, for they will remind you of your own fond experiences. A book I would recommend to all bibliophiles.

This one's been on the piles for at least a year now, and upon cracking it open today, I discovered it's an entire book full of quotes about books: reading, collecting, borrowing, defacing and, in the last chapter, the horrifying prospect of running out of them.

I read most of the quotes in the first half, but skimmed the rest, looking for citations that included names or book titles I recognised. Rugg gets bonus points for a collection that is not a retread of all the popular internet memes; there were very few quotes here that I recognised, and sadly for my TBR, a few titles that the stacks will soon be forced to take in and provide shelter for.… (altro)

Lover of books have a only one problem; where to put all the books they own. Pratchett got around not having enough book shelves by inventing L space, the distortion of time and space that the presence of many books creates. The author of this has scoured novels, memoirs, diaries and quotations by authors famous and not so famous and complied them into one slim volume on all things bookish.

So far so good.

Or so you would think. There is a lovely little introduction, and the author has spent a lot of time finding these quotes and extracts and then collating them into chapters with a common themes, but then failed to actually link them with any sort of narrative or personal anecdotes. It is a shame really because there are some superb quotes in here.… (altro)

A lovely collection of quotations for those who enjoy books. Some are thought-provoking, some hilarious, some ridiculous. Most are like a convention of bibliophiles in a pub, each stating their love of books and all those gathered round are nodding their heads. When you consider that the gathered souls in this pub are from several different centuries, yet expressing sentiments we modern bibliophiles can identify with, you will see why I loved this book. I was sad and startled when I turned the page only to find that I had come to the end and all that was left was the index. Still, there are many books and authors whose quotes are included here which it will be fun to seek out.… (altro)
