This book provides the basic history of Ellis Island. It shares a lot of similar information that I have read in other books about Ellis Island, and a lot of the same pictures as well. This book is not to lengthy and written in easy text, making it perfect for a gr.K-3 reader. I would recommend this book to a younger student in search of quick and easy details of Ellis Island or Immigration.

A historical nonfiction book on immigration in America. It is very informative of what took place near Ellis Island during wartimes when immigration was at an all time high. A great addition to a lesson plan to introduce a class to immigration if they are unfamiliar with it. I would have definitely used this book alongside Seedfolk. Only problem was that it was a boring read.

Simply told, with lovely watercolor illustrations, Windows With Birds is the story of moving house, as seen by the family cat. This is the house," it begins, "that had windows with birds, twenty-six stairs, twenty-nine hiding places, and one foolish mouse in the basement." But nothing lasts forever, and one day, the cat's boy - who had always refilled his water bowl, and scratched him in just the right places - zips him into his jacket, and brings him to a strange new place, high above the ground. Will the cat ever come out of his hiding place in the closet, and adjust to this new home...?

This book is adorable! Karen Ritz obviously understands cats, and she captures a dislocated feline's feelings perfectly, with her simple, straightforward text. As for her illustrations, they are absolutely delightful, depicting this pretty kitty's playful antics (he likes to hide in boxes, and to swat his boy, when he wants attention, and the boy is too distracted by reading), and his moments of distress. I particularly identified with the cat's enjoyment of the windows, which are called "Kitty TV" in my house, due to our cat's fascination with the antics of the squirrels in the tree just outside. I think that young children, who are moving themselves, will find comfort in this tale of a beloved pet who successfully adjusts to his new home. They will also be reminded, if they have animals of their own, that their pets will also be struggling to find their feet in a new environment. Highly recommended!
