{My Thoughts} – Nicole is a college Freshman at Katon University. This specific university is one of few in the United States that is there for Magically enabled people to better learn their magical skills. Nicole is an Arete, a fourth child of parents with magical abilities. It is explained in this book that most people only have one or two children because it is really hard for them to have more then that, and those that manage to have a fourth give birth to an Arete.

Nicole is an interesting character. She seems to have her flaws, but she has her solid points as well. She is an amazing Cello player. Her description makes her seemingly beautiful. She appears to be well schooled and has a ton of book smarts. She also has common sense and isn’t afraid to study until she can’t anymore. She has problems channeling her magic, she has problems controlling her magic, she has problems all around, but can she get it under control before it’s too late?

Austin is a classmate of hers that is different in a sense, but he is adorable, and handsome and a lady’s man. He is everything every girl wants in a guy. The other girls fawn over him and Nicole keeps her distance, thinking that he is a teacher’s pet and well a jerk. I can see where she got the impression, but I wonder if it will stay true throughout the entire book? I guess you will need to read it to find out.

These two characters make for a nice duo throughout the book. They get along and then they don’t, and then they might and well you get the picture. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I look forward to reading the remainder of the series when it is released. In the mean time I know I will need to track down the Novellas that have been released. I am always interested in reading more on a series!

I have been following Andrea Pearson for some time now. I love her sense of humor, which comes out in her writing style. Her books deal with danger in a light hearted manner. That is not to say that her characters don’t take the danger seriously, because they do.

Here’s an example:

She whacked me once as if chastising me for not obeying sooner, then scrambled off as I stretched.

Lizzie is talking about her cat and I couldn’t help but smile, letting a picture run through my head.

Lizzie is an Arete, a fourth born child with special powers, a Fire Impeder. She is able to micro manage fire, right down to individual molecules, preventing the sparks from igniting

Humans are aware of supernaturals, because they have been here before.

“…demons from other planets have come out of sheer curiosity. I’m worried they’ll like it enough to stay.”

They are back, because a Prophecy given many years ago said she would be born and would be a danger to all the demons. From the hellhounds to the fire vampires. I mean, aren’t regular vampires bad enough? Now, Andrea Pearson has to crank them up. 🙂

She must go the Alaska to learn of The Prophecy, found in the Akashic records. The Shade Amulet will help protect her.

Wowzers – he smelled good.

There is a triangle, of sorts, between Abel, Cole and Lizzie. When she lets Cole know there is another man she has feelings for:

“Good. Don’t underestimate the need a man has to conquer.”

I feel this is very much for teen and young adults and was a spin off of another series, though the description does not say that. The characters keep referring back to previous events and I feel like I’m missing out on something. That won’t stop me from continuing on to the next story in the Koven Chronicles, The Black Masquerade.

In a note from the author she states that every time someone leaves a review, Lizzie punches a hound in the face. See these hellhounds are a series problem, I’m all for that.

Book 3 – Perceive
The first book of this series was intense and packed with action. As much fun as I had reading that book, this one was way more intense. Can I just say wow!
After all the harrowing adventures of book 1, Nicole’s power is still not very reliable or controlled – but at least she now knows the tool that will help her focus her abilities. An opportunity to work on her control with a powerful focus tool happens to be at a location where a meteor has recently struck. Nicole learns there are no coincidences as she struggles to save a family from death and learns many unexpected truths about her own family.
You definitely want to read the first book and then the three short stories that make up book 2 **before** you read this story. Otherwise, various comments and reasons for actions won’t make much sense.

A well-written book and a good start to the series. Jacob achieved his goal, but with enough loose ends that he has to go back and solve them.
