Le risorse sono agli sgoccioli: ogni persona é dotata di un bonus traducibile in risorse che impoveriscono il pianeta (dalle bistecche biologiche ai tessuti contenenti fibre plastiche).
Un altro aspetto è la sovra-popolazione: in alcuni casi viene limitata da organismi preposti, in altri casi tassata.
E' il caso della protagonista che deve decidere se e quale terminare dei due gemelli che ha appena messo al mondo, la scelta è difficile, anche a causa del padre egoista e insensibile che non ne vorrebbe nemmeno uno.
Il racconto tocca temi attuali e è ben scritto, anche grazie al passaggio tra i punti di vista dei narratori.
L'unica pecca dell'edizione digitale è in alcune parole di carattere più grande delle vicine; potrebbe essere un errore di edizione (e non sarebbe bello visto che il racconto si appoggia a una casa editrice), alla peggio potrebbero essere concetti sottolineati, personalmente non apprezzo quando altri mi evidenziano concetti per loro importanti, è sfiducia nel lettore.… (altro)

"The final dream" ha una ambientazione futuristica per alcuni aspetti, per altri riflette tendenze del mondo attuale.
Durante il giorno le persone si dedicano anima e corpo al lavoro, spesso insoddisfacente, mentre passano le serate in incontri schedulati con mariti, mogli e amanti vari, il tutto con consapevolezza e accordo di tutte le parti interessate.
La notte però è dedicata al sogno: gli uomini non sognano più da soli, ma, grazie a servizi in abbonamento, riescono ad avere sogni piacevoli direttamente trasmessi nel loro cervello. Un creatore di sogni in particolare, Yosif, è particolarmente apprezzato per le sue produzioni, però qualcosa sta cambiando.
Il romanzo breve segue Brian, legale di un importante studio, e sua moglie, entrambi sottoscrittori dei sogni di Yosif e come i sogni influiscano sulla loro vita coniugale e lavorativa.
Come in molti romanzi di Philip K. Dick anche qui gli umani hanno necessità di un mezzo che li allontani dalla realtà quotidiana, in Dick erano droghe o simulazioni, qui sono i sogni.

"The final dream" has a science fictional setting for most of the themes dealt with, however it reflects also various aspect of the actual way of living.
During the day people live for their works, unsatisfactory for most of the times, while they spend their perfectly scheduled evenings with their husbands, wives and lovers.
Night is for dreams only: men are mostly unable to have happy dreams by themselves, so they please the need of dreaming by subscription services that send happy dreams directly to their brains.
Yosif is a particularly appreciated dream artist, but something is changing in its productions.
The short novel follows Brian, lawyer of an important corporation, and his wife, both subscribers of Yosif dreams. The novel points out how dreams influence people marriages and working lives.
Similar themes can be found in Philip K. Dick novels; there humans need something (drugs or simulation) to avoid their horrific life, here they need to dream happily.

Review in italian and exceptionally in english

Russia, fine della seconda guerra mondiale. Le armate tedesche sono sempre più disperse; una di queste, comandata dal Colonnello Knatte, è sfiancata dalla fatica e dalla malattia e si trascina un capitano (più morto che vivo) ferito a una gamba.
Nel loro vagare si imbatteranno però in un villaggio ebreo, uno dei pochi rimasti, e verranno a conoscenza della fama di guaritore di Yoel Sternberg.
Meglio non dire altro per non rovinare la lettura con fastidiosi spoiler; il racconto parla di guerra, di sopravvivenza e di giustizia.
Trovo che Pearlman sia un ottimo scrittore capace di affrontare generi diversi (questo racconto parla di guerra e soprannaturale, ma sa scrivere anche con ironia e di fantascienza) e di riuscire a tenere vivo l'interesse del lettore; se provasse a cimentarsi con un formato più complesso come quello del romanzo penso proprio che lo leggerei.

Russia, end of II World War. The German army are broken up; one army, commanded by Colonnel Knatte, is particularly worn out due to fatigue and illness and is dragging the almost dead captain with a wounded leg.
During their wondering they will came upon one of the remaining Jew village and they will learn of the amazing healing abilities of Yoel Sternberg.
It's better to not describe the plot any further to avoid bothersome spoilers; to summarize the novelette speaks about war, surviving and justice.
I think Pearlman is a very good writer able to deal with different litterary genres (this novelette is about war and supernatural, but he is able to write with irony and about fantascientific stuff) and to keep the reader interested; all in all if he would write a more complex and long novel I will surely read it.

It's a marvelous thing when a story takes exactly as long as it needs, and not a sentence longer. In an overpopulated future, natural resources are shared evenly among the billions of people, by a very strict accounting. Having more than one child is strongly discouraged. Nina has just given birth to twins, and is expected to choose one, and surrender the other. She has one hour to decide, with the help of a morally-minded nurse and her husband, Bucky. But she's the one who has to make the horrible decision.

Pearlman does a marvelous job of introducing the reader to just enough details of his future to make it comprehensible and real. It's certainly not hard to imagine our world becoming his. He reveals only enough to keep the tension tightly focused on Nina. It's a nail-biter all the way. I think Shirley Jackson would have loved it.
