A collection of what might be better termed short books or essays with some very knowledgeable writers and introduction by Russell Shorto. There is a lot of overlap, including the same pictures in the different sections, and the far-flung subject matter (ex- The Reformed Dutch Church vs The Holland Society visiting the Fatherland), virtually ensures there will be some parts of greater interest to all readers than others. This very detailed account of the founding and shaping of the county that I call home is chock full of information...perhaps more information than is necessary. From the first days of the Lenape Indian Tribes, to the heyday of IBM and Reader's Digest, Westchester was, and continues to be, a place brimming with history and tradition. If you're from the area, I suggest you at least skim through this one. The writing style is detailed and rather verbose in some spots, so those not trained in historical reading may find it boring.… (altro)
