- The Panama Canal Commission is an agency of the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government, provided for by the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977 and established by the Panama Canal Act of 1979, enacted Sept. 27, 1979. This Commission superseded the Panama Canal Company and the Canal Zone Government. It ceased to exist after December 31, 1999, when the Republic of Panama assumed responsibility for the canal.
