This book focuses on some of the earliest forms of art in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the south Pacific. There are good introductions to each chapter that set the stage for the pictures. The photographs of the ancient art are very good with a few exceptions, and are the main reason to get the book. There are some images here that are difficult to find other places and it is not just cave paintings, there are also sculptures and carvings.
If you are interested in prehistory or art then you will probably enjoy this book. Some of this artwork is 40,000 years old but the images are recognizable as lions or people which shows that our ancestors who made these items were not too different from us. They saw the world through eyes just like our own and had great talent given the tools at their disposal.
There is a time line and a map in the back for the sites covered in the text. The bibliography is a good resource for further reading on most of the the subjects and sites discussed.… (altro)
