I've been Mentally Ill™ for 16 odd years now. I've been on all sorts of meds, talked to all sorts of therapists, and have done the outpatient day program at my local hospital, like, 3 times. I've been around the block a bit, so to speak, and this book speaks so true to my experiences. The constant striving for perfection and higher achievements because if you don't succeed, there'll be no reason to keep you around. The way your mind wanders into dark alleys even if you weren't anywhere close to them. It also helped me realize some things about myself that I never considered; turns out missing 5 years of school because you became so agoraphobic you couldn't leave your house, does in fact, count as a traumatic experience. There's also just something so genuine hearing it from the horse's mouth- it's one thing for a doctor to explain things to you, but it's entirely something else to read something and go "OH MY GOD, YES! THAT!"

As someone who's currently moving through another bout of depression, I found this book at exactly the right time. Thanks, Mr. Moe.

DNF @ Page 176. Just lost interest, though I like John Moe's writing style.

I don't think it was the author's intent, but he made depression sound like such a singular type of illness, that most people experience in the same way, and treat more or less identically. At times it almost came across as judgmental. It took away from what was an otherwise poignant and well-written memoir.

There were so many times that I just stared at the page thinking: YES. THAT IS EXACTLY IT. I also really enjoyed his sense of humor and music references. I have not listened to this podcast but that will be immediately remedied.
