- Hannah Maria Webster was born on a small farm and ran away from home at age 14. She worked as a dressmaker and servant and taught herself to read and write. In 1895, she married Gibbon Mitchell. She got involved in the trade union and women's suffrage movements and became an organizer and public speaker. In 1924, she was elected to the Manchester City Council. She also became a magistrate in 1926, and served for 11 years. Her autobiography was published after her death.
