BRITISH AUTHOR CHALLENGE OCTOBER 2015 - DUNMORE & MITCHELL in 75 Books Challenge for 2015 (Gennaio 2016)

This was very well done. I like David Mitchell‘s droll humour and he writes well about the subject. No endnoting, but the further reading list contains some good sources. I ended up buying the audio immediately afterward with a spare Libro.fm credit.

3.5 Would have liked this better if I had more than a passing notion of who's who in British politics in the past few years, but I found it amusing and full of sad truth anyway.

David Mitchell's Back Story is a humourous memoir of the British comedian's life, right back to childhood. I listened to this memoir as an audiobook, which was fun because Mitchell himself narrated, and his pleasant chirpy voice always cheered me.

I had great hopes for this memoir but didn't find it as compelling as I'd wished. There are some great highs - the chapter where he meets and falls in love with his wife (the beautiful and brilliant Victoria Coren Mitchell) was one of the most powerful love stories I've ever heard. Other chapters, however, left me cold and uninterested as I guess I'm just not as keen to find out details of English prep school and university life as one would need to be to truly enjoy the book.

Good, but ultimately unsatisfying and occasionally boring: that's my verdict.

I’m a big admirer of David Mitchell on TV, especially “Would I Lie to you?” Until this week, I had not experienced him as a writer. We don’t get his column in The Observer down under. I was therefore quite surprised to discover I didn’t enjoy David In Print. Mitchell’s droll humour, much anticipated by me, just doesn’t fit comfortably with the history. I too quickly got tired.
