This book reminded me of stories about my husband’s grandparents. His grandfather lost a parent who remarried and then died. So he was raised by someone who was not a blood relative. That story did not have such a happy ending. Times were tough in the 1800s. This book brings that across. What brought comfort was the way the author portrayed Rachel, Melvin, Clay and the Sullivans with a deep faith. God sustained them through the tough times. I liked the way they all came to aid Rachel as she worked through depression. I grew fond of five year old Thomas and the instant connection with Grammie. Although they were not blood relations, God brought them together. And isn’t that the best kind of family?
This is a great beginning to a series set in Missouri. I am anxious to read the next story about neighbor Pete and brother Charlie.

DESIRE OF MY HEART: SHUMARD OAK BEND #1 by Heidi Gray McGill

It was good that this book was only available on my PC because otherwise, I would have stayed awake for however many days and nights to read the novel all of the way through.

I simply adored this book. The main character Rachel, along with her younger brother Charlie, are orphans at an orphanage in Missouri. Rachel has not been treated very nicely by the matron and she is desperate to escape with Charlie.

The book has many different sides to it: Including, adventure, convenience, longing to be loved, orphans, love, a family not by blood but by choices of the heart, and above all trusting in our Lord.

Highly recommend. Suitable for gifts. The author, Heidi Gray McGill has earned my devotion, for all time. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
