Breve biografia: Xavier Mayne is the pen name of a professor of English who works at a university in the Midwest United States. Versed in academic theories of sexual identity, he is passionate about writing stories in which men experience a love that pushes them beyond the boundaries they thought defined their sexuality. He believes that romance can be hot, funny, and sweet in equal measure.

The name Xavier Mayne is a tribute to the pioneering gay author Edward Prime-Stevenson, who also used it as a pen name. He wrote the first openly gay novel by an American, 1906’s Imre: A Memorandum, which depicts two masculine men falling in love despite social pressures that attempt to keep them apart.

Frat House Troopers (Brandt and Donnelly Capers… di Xavier Mayne

Well written with a good plot. This is another good example of sexual fluidity. Not having read many police stories, I found this to be both comedic and a good light read that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Wrestling Demons (Brandt and Donnelly Capers Book 2) di Xavier Mayne

There is a certain depth to this series that stirs me. Brandt and Donnelly are great as cops and partners. I think that Bryce and Nestor are hilarious. Jonah and Casey, new in this book, are a strong, sweet couple. I absolutely hate the label "gay for you" and what Mr. Mayne does is to do away with the gay label. You simply fall in love with whom you fall in love with, male or female. I have enjoyed the mix of an investigation and the challenge of life in general. This story revolved around Jonah and Casey who are high school seniors and best friends. They live in a very strict bible belt type of town so once word gets out that they have fallen in love a virtual firestorm of hate erupts. I felt that the sex at Brandt's house was overdone but publishers want sex scenes. It's nice to see recurring characters in a series. While this book can be read as a stand alone, the reader would gain a lot by reading Frat House Troopers first to get some background… (altro)

Bachelors Party (5) (Brandt and Donnelly Capers) di Xavier Mayne

This series demands to be read in order otherwise you will be totally lost and wondering what in the world is happening. I started this series 5 years ago and for some reason got waylaid...so I had to go back and read the first 4. Glad I did because I remembered how much I liked these two guys and their offbeat “case files. This is James and Oliver’s story and unfortunately Brandt and Donnelly have only a minor role in it. I missed seeing them work together. Oliver is adorable as the straight bartender in the gay bar. James is a regular at his end of the bar. James is a huge tipper, but there is a bit of sadness in him, Oliver always looks forward to their conversations during his weekly visits to the club. James is in politics and Oliver is about to be caught up in the ugliness of James' life and the lies that have been told. I really disliked James for what he did and had a bit of a harder time forgiving him than Oliver did. James and Oliver hideout together and of course things go from hate to love in the blink of an eye as they try to figure out damage control. I enjoyed their story, but I really missed the Brandt and Donnelly involvement. Maybe what Xavier Mayne has shown with this one is that love is love wherever you find it and we shouldn't be putting labels on it.… (altro)

A Wedding to Die For (3) (Brandt and Donnelly Capers) di Xavier Mayne

When a local baker and florist turn away a prominent gay couple and refuse to work their wedding, the couple strikes back. State law has recently been affirmed to prohibit discrimination, and the issue just might end up in court. But the governor and the attorney general would like to avoid that, which is why state police officers Brandt and Donnelly are called in to assist. And they resolve the issue with only a single meeting with each vendor.

The owners still aren't keen on being associated with the wedding, however, leading them to each assign their sons to take on the task. It turns out that Justin and Roman are old friends who haven't seen each other in years. And it also turns out they might just both have an interest in being more than friends.

Despite everyone's best efforts, disaster strikes at the wedding. And the case that Brandt and Donnelly thought was over in a day becomes much larger...and more sinister than they could have imagined.

There are a few different plot lines here that are masterfully woven together to create an excellent story. There's Brandt and Donnelly and their efforts to plan their own wedding. There's the wedding that's the centerpiece of the story. There's the Justin and Roman relationship. And then the crime solving piece that comes into play for the second half of the book. It sounds like a lot going on, but it never really feels like it while reading it.

I will warn that there is a very brief moment of dub con here. It goes by quickly, but it's an intense blip so I feel like it needs to be mentioned to anyone considering reading the story.

Although this is "Caper #3," I will say that it's the first book in this series that I've read. It's not necessary to have read the previous books to follow what is going on, though there is the occasional reference that might make just a bit more sense with the full backstory of the previous books.… (altro)
