In this collection, 22 prominent Canadian women talk about their fathers. I was surprised at the number of recollections that included sick or missing mothers who propelled fathers into the limelight or abusive, authoritative father who neglected their children. In fact, a very small percentage had happy stories to tell... Martin, in editing this series, tried to find women from ages 25-90, but even with the younger women, fathers are strangely absent or seen through the light of the mothers. Most stories are extremely well-written and the potency of the raw emotions described make them almost fiction-like, but therein lie the talent of these remarkable writers and the intensity of their relationships with their fathers.… (altro)
