Mair had been approached by the editor of the Bay of Plenty Times to write the story of the Battle of Gate Pā for a commemorative issue. ‘The demand for copies of that Special Issue was so great... that I have been prompted to now publish the account of that memorable engagement in pamphlet form.’ (Gifford, as cited in Mair, 1937, p. 4).
