Jeannette Marie Mageo is a professor of Anthropology at Washington State University. Between 1981 and 1989, she resided and did fieldwork in Samoa. She is the author of Theorizing Self in Samoa (1998) and is the editor of Dreaming and the Self (2003), Power and the Self (2001), Cultural Memory: mostra altro Re/Configuring History and Identity in the Pacific (2001), and Spirits in Culture, History, and Mind (with Alan Howard, 1996). She has published widely on cultural psychology, cultural history, and religion, as well as on sex, gender, and the self in the Pacific. She consulted for and appeared in a documentary made for Channel 4 in Britain, Paradise Bent: Boys will be Girls in Samoa, framed by her historical interpretation of Samoan transvestitism (1992, 1996, 1998). It won a Silver Plaque in the "Documentary-Humanities" section of the Chicago International Television Awards and toured with the Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History.
