SUMMARY/ EVALUATION:
-SELECTED: When I discovered this book at a used book sale, I was reminded of an old friend from my college days, Beth, who’d used her education in photography to become an underwater photographer and tour guide on the Cayman Islands in the 80’s. So, of course I had to get it. I placed it at our desert house, on the coffee table, and read it only occasionally. I was less than 5 pages from being finished when a rare downpour broke through the ceiling just above the book and doused it with a torrent of rain water & soggy ceiling fluff. That was my impetus to (clean it off and) finally finish reading it.
-ABOUT: This is a coffee table travel book. The photographs are great. The text primarily describes landscapes, and profiles many long-time residents.
-OVERALL IMPRESSION: The photos and descriptions of the residents and the island are compelling.
The final topic left me with a bit of a bad taste. Highlighting a “turtle farm” of endangered green turtles that produces and releases thousands of turtles, where visitors may handle turtles, might have worked for me, had it not included that visitors may also love the menu at the associated cafeteria which features a variety of turtle meals.

SAMPLE QUOTATION: Excerpt From the Forward
“One of my most precious memories of growing up in Cayman is one of working in the family shoestore with my aunts and cousins while on Christmas break from school. We knew everyone who came into the store, and it was a gathering spot for aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and friends. Each day everyone brought in either a cooked ham or turkey, and we would enjoy eating it throughout the day. During the days leading up to Christmas most of the stores in town were open late. George Town was vibrant with people greeting each other and enjoying the novelty of the extended hours, while kids set of the ‘fire rackets’ that were brought in especially for the holidays. Such a festive, warm and safe feeling surrounded the town. The gathering spots for friends and families and the time we had with each other gave us such a sense of community.”

RATING: 3 stars.

I loved this series as a child. Good informational text with good pictures. Short enough for young children but long enough for older children.
Age 4-7

I would use this book because it is relatable for students, the character is about the same age as many of the 3rd grade student body. I also really like this book because it is mostly story, with a lot of great featured facts in the book also. I would use this book as a read-aloud because it has so much detail that the students can ask questions about the animals they are looking at.
