Introduction

Nous nous proposons d'éludier ici quelques aspects de
la spiritualité orientale en rapport avec les thèmes
fondamentaux de la tradition dogmatique orthodoxe. Le
terme de u théologie mystique n ne désigne donc ici rien
d'autre qu'une spiritualité exprimant une attitude
doetrinale.

En un certain sens, toute théologie est mystique, en
tant qu'elle manifeste le mystère divin, les données de la
rávélation. D'autre part, on oppose souvent la mystique
à la thoologie, comme un domaine inaccessible à la
connaissance, comme le mystère inexprimable n fond caché
qui peut être vécu plutôt que connu, se livrant à une
expérience spécifique qui dépasse nos facultés d'entendement,
plutôt qu'à une appréhension quelconque de nos
sens ou ue notre intelligence Si l'on adoptait sans réserve
cette dernière conception, en opposant résolument la
mystique à la théologie, on aboutirait finalement à la
thèse de Bergson qui distingue dans Deux sources la
« religion statique des Eglises, religion sociale et conservatrice,
et la u religion dynamique » des mystiques, religion
personnelle et rénovatrice. Dans quelle mesure
BergBon avait-il raison en affirmant cette opposition?
La question est malaisée à résoudre, d'autant plus que,
pour Bergson, les deux termes qu'il oppose dans le domaine
religieux se fondent sur les deux pôles de sa vision...… (altro)

I had read this book several years ago when I first had learned about the Orthodox Church and was trying to find out more about. I don't remember my reaction to it much other than that I was deeply impressed and completely confused. It's a bit difficult to read if you are, as I was then, entirely unfamiliar with the history of the Church and with Orthodox theology and terminology. But, now that I'm much more familiar with those, I have to say that this book is amazing. I think that everyone who converts to Orthodoxy should do what I did. Read it as one of the first books you read when becoming Orthodox and after living the Orthodox life for a few years read it again. It is without doubt the best book on Orthodox spirituality and theology in the English language -- the classic and the standard.… (altro)
