- Helen E. Longino majored in literature as an undergraduate before moving to graduate study in logic and philosophy of language, and then to the philosophy of science and theory of knowledge. She earned her PhD in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University. She was active in anti-war and women's liberation movements in the late 1960s and 1970s, and helped establish or maintain women's studies programs at several of the universities at which she taught, including Mills College, Rice University, and the University of Minnesota. She is now chair of the Philosophy Department at Stanford University. Her first book was Science as Social Knowledge (1990).
