My years as a merchandising buyer will always remind me, I was a part of an iconic company which help change the way Americans shopped. And, was the trendsetter in what became the retail shopping experience in the 40s-60s. It's an honor to have been a part an historic store.

In Shop Pomeroy's first, Michael Lisicky has traced the history of the Pomeroy's Store franchise from its beginnings as Dives, Pomeroy & Stewart and its expansion to Pottsville, Wilkes Barre, Harrisburg and Pottstown; the sole ownership of George Pomeroy; suburban expansion and the difficulties of downtown locations; purchase by Allied Corporation; and the merger with Bon Ton stores, losing the revered Pomeroy name. There are numerous photos and advertising pieces from all the stores as well as extensive footnotes and an index. Some recipes from Reading's Tea Room are included. The foreword is written by Reading store owner and philanthropist Albert Boscov.

My mother shopped at Pomeroy's on Reading as her store of choice. Whitner's, the upscale department store, was simply too expensive for our family. Christmas was so special at Pomeroy's, from Toyland to the wonderful window displays.

When I started doing my own shopping, I went to both department stores. Later, I shopped at the Pomeroy's Berkshire Mall, but, when the name changed to the Bon Ton, I decided that dropping the Pomeroy name meant I needed to go elsewhere and Boscov's was the right choice.

The book jumps from location to location within the chapters so it's difficult to find all the Pomeroy's of Reading material, including the its local competitors. This is the most complete history of the store that I have seen and brings back so many memories of those days.
