The photographer here aims to recreate the aura of the nineteenth-century paintings of the Hudson River School, which immediately raises a "Why?" test, since those paintings are justly celebrated for their beauty and sublimity. The book succeeds, winningly, with truly striking interpretations of both nature and the occasional building, sculpture, or garden (unfortunately, a few motor vehicles also sneak in--surely this outstanding photographer has taken enough worthy images to have left the period vibe completely intact). A few brief quotations from writers who have lovingly described the Hudson Valley are sprinkled throughout, and this is an altogether fine production.… (altro)
