Slightly dated now as events have moved on, but interesting in view of current Euro crisis.
I'm not convinced that just because say Nazi's were keen on a european union it means that the EU is consequently a flawed idea.

Interesting view, with mainly deals with the legality or otherwise of the ICTY and how it conducted it's business in connection with Milosevic. Laughland is firmly of the belief that the tribunal itself wasn't legally constituted and then conducted it's business in a very biased fashion to ensure that a guilty verdict would be fortcoming. Whilst he makes a very convincing case, it is so one sided thatI didn't feel I got a balanced view. I find it hard to believe that the whole enterprise was the "Kangeroo Court" that he portrays.
It doesn't really give a narrative of the trial as most of the book deals with the constitution and procedure of the trial. At the end of the book I didn't have any real concept of whether I felt Milosevic was guilty of anything and if so, what. That's a pity because I wanted a chance to make up my own mind. In the end Laughland came across as biased as the ICTY he portayed.
Nevertheless it is a thought provoking book about the nature of justice in cases of this sort, and poses some discomforting questions about how the Serbs and Milosevic have been portrayed in the past 20 years. I just wish the book was more balanced and less negative. It's easy to portray everything as bad, but nothing in life is ever like that. Laughland would have done himself many favours by being more constructive in his criticism.

Poliittisilla oikeudenkäynneillä on pitkä historia 1600-luvulta tähän päivään asti. Vuonna 1649 Englannin kuningas tuomittiin kuolemaan valtiopetoksesta. Huhtikuussa 2009 Perun entinen presidentti tuomittiin 25 vuodeksi vankeuteen ihmisoikeusrikoksista.

Monien mielestä nykyisin yleistyneet oikeudenkäynnit valtiojohtajia kohtaan kansanmurhista tai rikoksista ihmisyyttä vastaan ovat positiivista oikeudellista kehitystä. Kirjoittajan mielestä asia ei välttämättä ole näin. Hän käy yksityiskohtaisesti kirjassaan lävitse erilaisia poliittisia oikeudenkäyntejä Charles I tuomiosta lähtien aina tähän päivään asti.
