The Children of La Loche

A collaborative project, Byron Through the Seasons was written and illustrated by the students of Ducharme Elementary School in La Loche, Saskatchewan, with the help of teachers and Dene elders. Told within the framework of a grandfather's visit to his grandson's school, it follows a Dene family through the seasons, from the fall, when everyone is busy laying in food for the winter, to the summer, when many families gather to visit and worship.

Presented in both English and Dene, this brief picture book will provide young readers with an accurate picture of a traditional Dene year. This is not really a "storybook," but although it cannot boast a particularly exciting plot, I imagine it would prove invaluable as a resource for children interested in learning about this First Nations people.… (altro)
