Historical young adult fantasy school story, set in the immediate aftermath of World War II. Because the characters are young--only 14--there is no romance here, unlike the related books in this fantasy milieu. The school details are well worked out and satisfying. And the characterizations are strong.

I highly enjoyed this.

A cosy fantasy mystery set in 1917. Lynet and a fellow crafter have developed magical journals that can pass messages to each other, and now they have orders to produce the journals en masse -- but more quickly and cheaply than they believe is possible. Her request for more assistance gets her assigned, not another skilled crafter, but a Schola man who has recently been invalided out of the war.

Much like Carry On (which I proceeded to reread), this explores the difficulties challenging problematic workplace practises during wartime, when people can be expected to obey orders without question (either because the answers are classified or because questions are seen as disloyalty) -- or because the questioner is dismissed because of their class status.

I liked Reggie’s clear respect for Lynet’s skill and achievements, and how the romance arises despite their class differences because of the way they respect each other and learn to work together.

This cosy historical fantasy is set in Albion in 1927. Thalia, a writer who has been struggling to build her career in London, goes to Dartmoor to stay in her aunt’s house while her aunt is away.

This is more of a Gothic mystery than Lake’s other novels. I enjoyed the strong sense of place and the atmosphere of suspense, and I really liked the way Thalia and Adam, both of whom are still dealing with trauma from their experiences of WWI, come to support and understand each other.

I was a bit hesitant about this one. One of the protagonists is Galen, from In the Cards -- I wasn’t satisfied with how part of his story concluded in that, and I wasn’t convinced that Point By Point could rectify that.

But, to my surprise, it really does! In part, because seeing how Galen has made peace with, and now understands, what happened in In the Cards helped to put it in perspective, as did seeing his subsequent interactions with the people that he’s closest to.

The other protagonist here is a journalist, Lydia, who knows Galen through a mutual friend, and asks for his help in getting invited to the right sort of parties so she can pursue an investigation. So there’s the fun of fake dating (albeit not called thus because 1920s), and the satisfying atmosphere of mystery, and a growing romance between two clever people who are learning how to work together and support each other. I liked this one a lot!
