Ezekiola endures Emerald training but struggles to meet the expectations of the trainers. Igor Sanza, certain that his student has not actually tapped into the Fountain of Fire, questions why Ezekiola does not tap into Zeke’s warrior skills now that the two have merged.

Ezekiola returns to Cypress School only to discover his friends are wary, concerned that he might be a threat. And, making things more troublesome, Falco Rasspan, the new head of the Forest Stewardship Council, is making things difficult for everyone.

Although this book is the second in the author’s Fountain of Fire series, readers will find sufficient backstory for the story to work as a standalone. With the expected characters in place, the unfolding narrative follows Ezekiola’s efforts to understand what has happened to him as a result of tapping into the Fountain of Fire and melding with Zeke.

Believable characters, a compelling plot, impressive world-building, and surprising revelations combine to keep readers turning the pages at breakneck speed; readers who enjoy science fiction and fantasy are sure to find much to appreciate in the evolving narrative that is both intriguing and unputdownable. Be warned, however; there’s a cliffhanger ending here.

At Cypress School on the planet Circa, Ezekiola Astrid and his friends, Nohlan Eridanus and Atlas Pleione, are preparing for the graduation ceremony at which they will receive their belts. Since Ezekiola has telepathic abilities, he expects to receive a Blue Belt while Nohlan will receive the Brown Belt for those studying nature and the macrocosm and Atlas will receive the Red Belt of logic. There are no surprises until Ezekiola, instead of receiving the anticipated Blue Belt, receives the Emerald Belt of the warrior.

Ezikiola plans to speak with the headmaster, Nomi Antares, and explain that he’d received an Emerald Belt in error, that he hadn’t trained for the warrior path. But he changes his mind after an unexpected slip into another world and a meeting with an enigmatic girl named Leanne.

As Ezekiola discovers new abilities, he finds himself facing a dangerous rival determined to destroy him. Can Ezekiola prevail? And what of the mysterious Leanne?

First in the author’s Fountain of Fire series, the targeted audience for this book is the teen and young adult reader. However, those who enjoy science fiction and fantasy are sure to appreciate this mesmerizing tale of friendship, tradition, and self-discovery. Well-developed, believable characters, impressive world-building, and an inventive plot pull readers into the telling of the tale from the outset.

Unexpected twists and revelations keep the suspense building while the imaginative tale offers tantalizing hints of romance. Strengths of the narrative include Ezekiola’s resolve as he faces new and unforeseen obstacles and the strong bonds of friendship between Ezekiola, Nohlan, and Atlas.

Although the narrative is more show than tell, readers are likely to find this unique tale difficult to set aside before turning the final page.

Highly recommended.
