The God and the Gumiho is the story of Seokga (A fallen god who must hunt and kill the 20,000 evil creatures he set loose during a failed coup) and Hani (a legendary fox spirit hiding her true identity after a killing spree in 1888, in which she ate so many people she's still not hungry over a hundred years later) as they team up to hunt down a monster that threatens the entire world.

This story takes place in South Korea in the 1990's and includes lots of Korean mythological elements and wears it's K-Drama influence on it's sleeve. I liked the Korean mythological elements a lot as I'm not very familiar with the subject and it was a nice change of pace from European inspired fantasy. The mix of mythological with the mundane was handled well While I didn't find the two main characters that likeable by themselves at the beginning their developing relationship kept me engaged and I thought they got much more likeable over the course of the story, especially Seokga.

If you are a fan of K-Dramas or are interested in stories based on Asian mythology, I'd recommend checking this out.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

TW/CW: Death, murder, sex (not very graphic), language

RATING: 4.5/5

REVIEW: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily writing an honest review.

The God and the Gumiho is a wonderful dive into Korean mythology. It is the story of the fallen god Seokga and the gumiho (an immortal fox shifter) Kim Hani, who are brought together to solve a series of supernatural crimes in the human world.

I loved this book. The writing was engaging, the characters were interesting, and it was a new mythology for me – something I always love reading. Although there are some pretty dark parts in this book, the writing keeps it from getting depressing, and there’s almost a whimsicality to some of it.

I am very much looking forward to the second book in this series, which I highly recommend!

First of all thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.

Holy OMG. I was so excited to read this. I initially saw it on Instagram and then was seeing it all over TikTok. So when I got an ARC copy I was so excited. This book went beyond expectations. I loved loved the world that Sophie Kim put into this book. Getting to learn about Korean mythology was so interesting.
The two main characters are to die for. Kim Hani and Seokga make such a dynamic duo. These two have become some of my favorite characters I have got to read about. This book was capable of bringing together fantasy, romance, a good mystery, and a little bit of spice too! I will definitely be checking out the other works by this author.… (altro)

Lina lost almost everything of meaning. What's left is her little sister, but her safety depends upon Lina's continued subservience to the gang lord who murdered all of her companions and treats her like a slave. Then Rui, more commonly known as the Pied Piper, steals both she and her tormentor away to his realm, a place that sits between the ones in her world, but not quite. He's bored and offers her a challenge. Kill him in fourteen days, or die. She might be determined, but he's godlike and every time she thinks she's figured out how to kill him, she's foiled. Then a completely different opportunity presents itself. You'll need to read the book to find out what it is and how everything plays out. I will say that unveiling is most satisfying.… (altro)
