I have a lot of mixed feelings on this one...

I was really excited for Cassian's story once the basis of it was revealed in [b:Nothing Matters|29420966|Nothing Matters (Family Matters Book 1)|Liana Key|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1457154353s/29420966.jpg|49681104]. A forbidden romance with an older woman? Yeah, that is super interesting and something you don't often come across in New Adult romance. And I just LOVE forbidden romance.

But the thing about forbidden romances is that you have to convince me that they belong together. Make me see why they should defy all convention and stay in love--and I didn't totally get that here.

Part of the problem was Paola's lack of maturity. For her being the older person, she had some pretty juvenile tendencies. She was so petty about things and overly jealous and possessive; and her inability to be independent drove me up the wall. If their ages weren't clearly stated, I would have thought Cassian was the older partner and Paola the needy, doesn't-know-better teenager. And that was what frustrated me because it made the relationship super unhealthy and odd to me (don't even get me start on her calling him her "sweet boy" all.the.time--ick). I wanted passion that made things seem right.

BUT, that being said, it was an interesting story to read for all the reasons I said. Maybe this isn't a relationship that isn't supposed to work or work right now. Or maybe it is a way to show that love can defy age.

I'm not sure, but I am definitely curious to see what happens next!

I won't lie, I thought this was going to be a simple, straightforward high school romance. Boy meets girl who he thinks is out of his league and high school drama ensues (like a love triangle)--SO NOT THE CASE!

While this book started off that way, it definitely shifted to a darker and more realistic edge. It gets gritty and real and Liana Key does a great job of making the characters evolve.

Take Magdala for example. I honestly didn't care much for her before the "major event". She seemed like a one dimensional character who didn't impress me that much. The same for Nathan. But after that event, they truly evolve as characters and it made me want to keep reading to see how they would handle whatever life threw at them next. The story becomes more of a coming of age one with a dash of romance on the side.

Flynn on the other hand, I loved from the get-go. He was so intriguing and instead of disliking him I really grew attached to his character.

There is more to this novel than "petty" high school drama and I really enjoyed the road this story took! Can't wait to see what happens to them in their next instalment!
