A Curse So Dark and Lonely was pretty good. The writing flowed well and the story was fairly interesting. I wasn't sure where the story was going around the middle of the book, but it got much more absorbing towards the end.

Grey is my favorite character in the book and I wish that his character was explored a little more. It looks like Grey has a bigger part in the next book, hopefully he is still as awesome. Harper and Rhen were alright, maybe a little flat. There wasn't much chemistry between the characters, but there were a few sparks here and there.

Some of this book was annoying. Like how Rhen thinks that Harper is so super special and "not like other girls". (Harper doesn't like to dance? So special. Harper actually fights back? Even more special.) And if Rhen just shows normal human decency, Harper thinks that he is super special, too. I'd excuse it as puppy love, but it doesn't really feel like that in the book.

I'll probably read the sequel, just to see where this story is going.

I suspect I would have enjoyed DESTROY THE DAY by Brigid Kemmerer a lot more had I not finished EMPIRE OF THE DAMNED before it. Unfortunately, Jay Kristoff left me so numb to shocking twists that when it came time for Ms. Kemmerer’s big shock, I felt nothing. It didn’t even phase me. I actually liked and appreciated it as an act of bravery on the author’s part.

As for the rest, I believe Ms. Kemmerer’s solution to the poisoning situation and Rian’s threats as very clever. Sometimes, the only way to resolve a problem is to go nuclear, something that works very well in DESTROY THE DAY.

I do love the series and appreciate everything Ms. Kemmerer does in DESTROY THE DAY. It’s just that everything pales in comparison to that other book, and it is going to take some time for that influence to fade.

I am surprised to see this isn't one of those books always being promoted on booktok or any other reading format, I might have to start doing that myself. I love the characters and this series, it takes Beauty and the Beast retelling to a whole different level and I just soaked it in. You have love, betrayal, loyalty and adventure.

This is one of my favorite books, of course I am a sucker for retellings, no matter I always recommend this book when anyone asks for recommendation that has to do with retellings, beauty and the beast trop, Fantasy and a damsel in distress that is not your typical weak damsel in distress. I have all 3 books in the series and I enjoyed them all.
