As a fairytale this book is far off the mark. I found some of the rituals that it told were a bit farfetched and wondered if people really could be that duped. As a love story its on the right track.

Once Upon a Curse is an excellent compilation of stories, mostly previously published, based on fairy tales and legends. The Peter S. Beagle story was the big draw for me, but I also liked the Patricia Wrede story and "Solstice Maiden" by the volume's editor, Anna Kashina. Received from the LibraryThing Early Reviewer Program in return for an honest review.

I really liked pretty much all of the stories. There was maybe one or two that I wasn't feeling, but the rest were great. My favorite was Frayed Tapestry. A Necklace of Rubies gave me the heeby jeebies. And Every Word I Speak was heartbreaking.

Oh and I got this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

While this left some threads dangling that could be used in a sequel this was a book that stood well on it's own.
Naia dreams of becoming a Jaihar Blademaster but she's not willing to bow down when she sees a wrong being committed so she does something that could wash her out completely, but her skills haven't gone unnoticed and she also fits a certain profile. The royal family of Challimar were slaughtered and Dal Cassan, head of the Daljeer Circle rescued her, with Mehtab to train her she fits the mould of a legendary princess, Xarimet of Challimar; but there are wheels within wheels and complicated things that will make it all less straightforward than it looks.
There's not a lot of fantasy in it, just enough to add a bit of spice and the story is interestingly not western european centric.
I want to read more by this author.
