Gr 2–5—An extraordinary alphabet takes children on an unforgettable cultural stroll through the sights and sounds of
one of the greatest neighborhoods in the world. Harrison's illustrations carve out the corners, hot spots, literary
influences, and more, till the sizzle of Harlem's heritage bursts from every page.

This is a lovely, almost "coffee table"-style book covering many of the sights and sounds of Harlem, from famous streets to jazz music, while paying homage to the people and places that make up the neighborhood's history.

Overall, this book is very nice for giving an overview of Harlem's many historic and cultural touchpoints. Using the alphabet to do so seems clever, but it results in many stretches, such as "M" being for Studio Museum, which is fact starts with an "S." However, I did really love the final words of the book: "H is for history. H is for a heart still beating strong. H is for Harlem, forever, whether you visit or call it home.

The illustrations are certainly colorful and eye-catching, although I thought the people looked a little too much like caricatures. Also, the very bright backgrounds made readability a bit of a challenge, so I wasn't a huge fan of that.

It is a nice story, artwork is above average, however, most of this information is told in a way that I have heard before. It was not unusual.

Good way to introduce to the idea that black is not a negative thing to be or a negative color. Great figurative language and illustration--introduce kids to poetry!

This is the kind of book that makes a person wish that they'd thought to write it first, though they know that their own story would have turned out differently. This is a beautiful piece. It has a strong personal focus that lets the reader feel comfortably intimate with the author and subject. What I'm saying usually goes something like, "I feel like I know her even though I've never met either person involved." Strong descriptive writing with a pleasantly simple scaffolded framework that allows the writer to explore the depths of her relationship with her grandparent.

If you are looking for a good example of a color poem like you would find in Hailstones and Halibut Bones, try this for Black is… It does the trick.

This was a fun book, though it certainly had a strong slant towards a religious culture. If that bothers you, this book might not be right for you though. It didn't bother me. Dinah Johnson has a strong grasp of literary devices and her strength is truly in her vivid descriptions.

I could read this to my niece and I'm sure she would really enjoy this. I just wish that there was more colorful language from Dinah Johnson in it. It was probably written to be read by a younger audience, but when you have Dinah Johnson on the job, I always want the full effect. She's too good to be limited.

Vibrant photogragh's lovingly portray young black girls enjoying all their different types of hair. A self esteem hair book with great, fun photos and poetic (if simple) sentances, this one comes with a source list of black hair resources for children and adults.½
