A big favorite in the elementary library, had to order 2 more copies because the current one is so loved but the kids. Really fun to read through, showing legos develop over the years.

This book was one of the first lego books I ever owned and listen. It blew my little 7 year old mind. I've held onto it as a source of inspiration for when I want to build something, so it's great for all ages.

The book has vivid images of people, places, and food including the different things people celebrate around the world. The celebrations are split by the seasons they are celebrated in and has beautiful imagery of different cultures. The book also includes a glossary and quiz at the end of the book. I would recommend this book so children can learn more about the world around them. This children's book would be great for 1st and 2nd graders to read.½

Brief, simplified telling of the story of Matoaka "Pocahontas" "Rebecca" Powhatan and her too short life, dying at 21 yrs. of age.

The Titanic (the unsinkable ship) sank April 15,1912 a tragedy that is still spoken about 100 plus years later. This book tells the tale of a young boy (Will) and his family's experience on that fateful maiden voyage. The book gives details about the different decks of the ship and who slept on them. The story has illustrations that highlight key words and images that help to explain the story. The night that the titanic sank the women and children were allowed on the lifeboats first. Will wanted to stay with his dad, so he did until his dad found a lifeboat for Will. The book highlights the experience of Will in the lifeboat as he reunited with his mother and sister but dad could not be found. The Carpathia arrived to save those in the lifeboats and survivors. It wasn't until the ship docked in New York Harbor did Will, his mother, and sister get reunited with Dad; an otherwise happy ending to a tragedy.

The photos are big, uncluttered images of real bats, and the text is simple enough for 3-year-olds,

"In the Dark
Bats squeak!
They hear the sound of the squeak.
It helps them to find their way in the dark."

This is a good nonfiction addition to story time.

This was a very straightforward book about Pocahontas' life. There is not too much text on the pages and there is a picture on every page. Some of the names of the Indians and their tribes may be difficult for younger readers to pronounce. There are some pages that have a vocabulary box with the vocabulary word bolded and a definition along with a picture.

I would say the message this book would be not judging a book by its cover and to be kind to people. Also, Pocahontas showed a lot of bravery in this story so that could also be a message. Pocahontas was the only Indian who did not want to attack the settlers as soon as they arrived on their land. She gave the settlers a chance and got to know them, specifically John Smith. John Smith and Pocahontas became friends and helped one another. John Smith taught her English and she taught him some Indian words. They worked together with the chief to keep the peace between the Indians and the settlers. Pocahontas also saved John Smith's life twice. She was very brave to stand up against her people and against her father who was the chief. She helped many of the settlers during the harsh winters and she was brave when she was kidnapped and taken to England.

In this book, readers learn about the sinking of the titanic through two characters' eyes: Lucy and Will. I like how the book puts characters in the situation, so kids have a better time understanding what really happened; the facts that they do use are still effective! I would read it to grades 2nd-4th in a lesson plan about the Titanic.

I really enjoyed this biography. It was a DK Reader Level 2, so it was for children who are beginning to read. I thought it was very clear and easy to understand. I love how it was told through the perspective of Pocahontas because it helped the reader understand her better. I liked that the book portrayed her feelings on things. For example, she said, “isn’t it exciting, Father,” talking about the new town that was being built. Through this, we see that Pocahontas is excited about the new town. We also were able to see what kind of person she was. For example, when the warriors were trying to kill Captain Smith, Pocahontas ran over and shouted, “stop.” This shows us how she was a caring and brave person. This leads me to my next positive of the book. I loved how there was dialogue between the people in the book. It was a lot more engaging this way because the events weren’t just being talked about, it was like the events were happening. One of my favorite features of the book was the footnotes on the bottom of some pages. Some pages had a little green box that went more in-depth about what was on that page in the story. For example, on the page about the church, the footnote said, “the settlers’ church- church was very important to the settlers and Pocahontas was baptized into the Christian religion.” I liked that it gave more detail and sometimes a definition because it helped me to understand the story better. The main idea of this book is to inform the reader about the life of Pocahontas.

In my opinion, “Welcome to China” is an enlightening informational book. This book is very engaging, organized, and accurate. It tells readers all about Chinese culture. The book has many textual features that help readers to stay engaged. For example, the book displays real pictures of China and its people, fun facts, and words in Chinese script (translated into English). Although the pages of this book have many textual features, the book is set up in an organized manner so that it does not overwhelm readers with information. This book is entertaining to read because of its writing, organization, and pictures. The writing is very descriptive in terms of discussing what life is like in China. For example, “Traditionally, Chinese children lived in the same home as their parents, grandparents, and sometimes their great-grandparents. Today, people move more often, and most homes are small, especially in the crowded cities. Family and friends often gather for mealtimes. A Chinese meal is made up of many different dishes, which are shared by everyone.” The writing is organized around pictures to provide fun facts and small paragraphs of information. The photographs of China and its people motivate children to learn more about Chinese culture. The big idea is to teach children all about the culture of Chinese people.½

4-6th grade
Survey Book

This Edison biography came from a series of books for children called DK Readers. This series features five levels of books from Level 1: Learning to Read to Level 4: Proficient Readers (The Jenner biography is Level 4). I was impressed with the amount of factual information crammed into this short book. It chronologically covers Edison’s entire life, focusing mainly on his contributions to society through invention. The text summarizes his most noteworthy inventions, occasionally providing interesting anecdotes depicting his zeal for his life and career. The margins of every page are filled with notes and thumbnails describing Edison, his work, colleagues, and inventions. It is impressive how much information Jenner crams into one little book. The book also contains a table of contents, glossary and index.
I recommend my students using this book as a reference for a report on Edison. It is too dry for reading to the class out loud. I fear it would not keep an entire class’ attention for more than five minutes. However, I would recommend it as free reading for a child who loves science.

Black Beauty is a story about the life and journey of a beautiful black horse. The classic is told from Black Beauty's point of view as he tells about his life, triumphs, and challenges. The story begins with Black Beauty as a young horse with his mother and concludes with Black Beauty as an old horse reunited with one of his kind caretakers. During the course of his life, Black Beauty has many homes and owners, both good and bad. This classic is very well written and a joy to read.

Huh, no reviews...

Anyways, this is a nice, well laid-out book for the LEGO fan. Contains lots of information and history on the company and the brand. Also within are plentiful color photos of large models, art built with, factories, and various designs.
Includes concept art for a (since released) product line.½

The Story of Pocahontas is a biography for children beginning to read. It is very detailed and precise, it tracks Pocahontas’s life from a young girl helping Captain Smith to her early twenties when she moved to England ,where she unfortunately died soon after. Children will learn that Pocahontas helped bring peace and friendship between the settlers and Indians in America. The drawings in this book are well detailed and there are many illustrations of the settlers and Indians living and working many years ago.

I have always been very interested in Indians, their customs, beliefs, and crafts are all quite intriguing to me. My husband is part Native American which also makes my daughter part Native American. Learning the history of Indians will make it easier for me to describe a part of my daughter’s nationality. Pocahontas was an amazing woman, I look forward to teaching my future classes about her strength and bravery.

After reading this book to my class I would have them write an essay on why Pocahontas was brave and what other characteristics would describe her.. A great arts and crafts project would be making Indian cities, the children could replicate the teepees illustrated in the book. Children could also write a story about what else Pocahontas could of accomplished if she hadn’t of died so young.
