Carmine Biagio Iannace

This memoir covers the last days of the author's stay in Italy and first year in America, followed by his temporary return to Italy. It is filled with lots of personal experience, information and observations, and it gives the reader a glimpse of life in the very early 20th century. It did get a bit boring, but after finishing it, I then read the translator's Afterword. This very valuable 38 pages gave me new insight into the value of the memoir as one that documented the life of a common laborer, a rare occurrence. Very glad I read that - it definitely rounded the experience. If you are looking for this kind of insight into Italian immigrants in the early years, this would be one to include in your list.… (altro)
