William Huckaby offers one viewpoint—a more pastoral viewpoint than some offer—for dealing with those who experience themselves to be sexually attracted largely, if not exclusively, to persons of the same sex as themselves. Although Huckaby employs somewhat problematic translations of the "Clobber Passages" of the Bible, traditionally used to shame and suppress homosexual behavior in society—English translations which fail to reflect adequately the nuance present in the original languages of these texts, he nevertheless possesses enough Scriptural knowledge and personal honesty to approximate an Orthodox Christian phronema or ethos regarding the subject of homosexual sin. Surprisingly, he is able to approximate a more Orthodox pastoral mindset despite his Protestant fundamentalist context and lack of important historical and linguistic knowledge needed to address the topic from a more knowledgeable standpoint. The sensibility Huckaby brings forth leads organically into an Orthodox approach of οἰκονομία, "economy," for pastoring those with whom same-sex attraction emerges instinctively.… (altro)
