Charming conceit, beautiful illustrations. I love seeing the little girl in her pajamas curled up with a raccoon, sleeping across a log with turtles, etc. Standing up with the giraffes is perhaps the best. A good book to catch little ones' imagination when they're old enough to understand a little bit of English, or focus on the illustrations.

In Jane R. Howards' "When I am Sleepy", a little girl explores how different animals sleep in their natural environments, and how that differs from the bed she sleeps in every night. This book's style follows the pattern "When I'm sleepy, sometimes I wish...." The illustrations also help the viewer to consider what the girl is thinking about. I would have this book as a read aloud and conversation about what students (kindergartners) daydream about doing.

There are multiple reasons why I like the book, “When I’m sleepy” by Jane R. Howard. This contemporary realistic fiction pushes readers to be imaginative and appreciative of the things they have and that you should be aware of others and their situation. The illustrations are appropriate to the mood of the story, which is slow and relaxing. Each picture features a girl sleeping in a range of different environments with animals around the world. They enhance the story by giving more imagery that the words can not do by themselves. It provokes anticipation at the end when she says “I’m so glad I can go to sleep in my very own bed under my own blanket with my head on my own soft pillow.” It makes the reader feel grateful for the things you have. The story is told from a first person point of view because it uses the words “I’m”, and “I”, making it more personable and relatable.… (altro)
