This collection of satiric journalism written by Ambrose Bierce puts to shame the pundits and opinion writers of today. Bierce was a fierce writer who saw most public figures as corrupt, dishonest, laughable, and foolish whether on the right or on the left. He called them on their folly, satirized them, and made them small by recounting what they did. That no one was safe goes without saying. An economic specialist has written, not a novel, not a dry economic study, but a "financial Western". The "little $25,000 bank…started in a frontier cattle town in Gila Valley and grew into the largest bank in the Rocky Mountian Region" multiplying its original grubstake by ten thousand times in 50 years while financing much of the extraordinary growth of the state. (The fact that the bank failed near the end of the 1900's is not known at this publication.)
