Hood (read 27 Aug 1984) Because I am watching more baseball than ever in my life, with the Cubs five and a half games ahead in the National League East, I thought it only right to read a baseball book. This book is about the 1934 St. Louis Cardinals--which is before I followed baseball, but there are a lot of players mentioned who were playing in 1938, when I became immersed in baseball. In the course of talking about Tex Carleton, who was with the 1938 Cubs, this book tells of the most dramatic event in my baseball life: "On Sept 28, another big crowd of 42,000 jammed the stadium to watch the tense struggle. With two out in the last of the ninth, up came manager Gabby Hartnett... It was growing dark....The visibility was so poor the fans could hardly follow the ball as Mace Brown, Pittsburgh's fine relief pitcher, delivered it. Hartnett hadn't had a hit all afternoon, and Brown quickly shot two strikes by him. The next one was belt-high and Hartnett drove it into the left-field stands to win the game. He circled the bases, grinning from ear to ear, shaking the hands of the hysterical Cub fans who poured out of the stands."… (altro)
