Hofmannsthal's plays are all written in verse, and most are modernized adaptations from other dramatists. His masterpiece, Electra (1903), was set to music by Richard Strauss. Dramas such as Jedermann (1911) and The Tower (1925, o.p.) showed him to be a serious and responsible social critic: their mostra altro "deep symbolism is pervaded by an uncanny insight into the demonic forces and potentialities of our century" (LJ). With Max Reinhardt, Hofmannsthal helped to found the Salzburg Festival of music and theater, which is still an annual event. He also collaborated successfully with Strauss, despite their divergent personalities and mutually preferred habit of working at a distance, through the mails. Hofmannsthal wrote the libretti for Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf NaxosDer Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Die Frau ohne Schatten. In his poetry, almost all written in his early twenties, Hofmannsthal proved himself to be the most socially sensitive of the Viennese poets of the 1890s. La donna senz'ombra: racconto di Hugo : von Hofmannsthal

Nel 1911 Hofmannsthal inizia la stesura di un libretto su cui il compositore Strauss lavora per realizzare un'opera in tre atti. Il lavoro che si conclude nel 1915, risulta talmente travagliato che lo stesso autore definisce il testo "figlio del dolore". La storia si svolge in un mitico regno delle Isole Sudorientali e l'eroina è una principessa delle fate che si innamora dell'imperatore del fantastico arcipelago e diviene la sua sposa. Su di lei pesa però una terribile maledizione: non è una vera creatura terrestre, prova di ciò non ha ombra ma soprattutto non può avere figli.
Malgrado lo sfarzo orientale "La donna senz'ombra" è una favola moralistica, sovraccarica di inutile simbolismo. Per la cui Hofmannsthal si ispirò alla commedia dell’arte e a Carlo Gozzi, ai racconti delle Mille e una notte (per l'edizione tedesca Insel del 1907 Hofmannsthal aveva scritto l’introduzione), a Goethe ( il personaggio della nutrice presenta molti tratti comuni al Mefistofele del Faust), e infine al Mozart deI "Flauto magico".… (altro)
